April Wilson's German Reading Courses

April Wilson offers popular German Reading courses which are designed to teach graduate students a reading knowledge of German sufficient to high pass the University of Chicago graduate language exam. April Wilson has independently taught similar courses for several years to University of Chicago students as well as to other students interested in learning how to read German.

The courses are given twice a year:

A 15 week fall course beginning the second Monday of fall quarter, which meets for 10 weeks, then has a Christmas break, resumes in January, and meets for 5 weeks, up until the day of the winter language exam; two sections are available.
An intensive 5 week summer course begins the first Monday of summer quarter, and ends the day of the summer language exam; three sections are available.

Although enrollment is limited to fifteen students per section, a new section might be added to accommodate additional students.

Classes are usually held at Ms. Wilson's apartment, which is 4 blocks from Regenstein.

*Students can take portions of the 15-week courses at a reduced cost:

Students who wish to learn German but do not need to pass the exam may take the first 10 weeks for $350
Students with some background in German wishing only to prepare for the language exam may take the final 5 weeks for $175

A $100 deposit is required by the first day of class. Any student who drops the course after the first week will not have to pay the remaining fee.

The text is April Wilson's German Quickly: A Grammar for Reading German, Fourth Edition, which can be purchased at the Seminary Co-op Bookstore. It is the best textbook currently available for learning how to read German. In addition, students will receive about 150 pages in handouts. Students interested in taking the course might wish to look at a copy of German Quickly before deciding whether or not to take the course. There are also two copies of the text at Regenstein.
